Description
Philotheca freyciana (freycinet waxflower) flowering at the RTBG Nursery.  Philotheca freyciana is a threatened endemic species only known to occur on granite hill tops within Freycinet National Park on Tasmania's east caost. Current population estimates put the number of mature wild individuals as less then 250. This species is listed as Endangered at both the state and federal level. Listing statement here (pdf).  Our plants are currently being grown as a seed orchard to develop a seed bank collection for long-term conservation storage. By establishing a good sized seed collection within our seed bank facility we will then be able to study germination requirements and also look at seed longevity. By understanding both of these seed traits conservationists will be able to factor in the role that soil seed banks might play in this species and also under what conditions recruitment is most likely to take place.
