Description
Kalia Elaeocarpaceae Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands (Kauaʻi & Oʻahu)* Kalauao Trail, Oʻahu  Early Hawaiians fashioned the strong woody fibers (bast) of kalia into cordage, and the slender branches for thatching rods, while the larger branches used for rafters.  * Apparently also recorded from Niʻihau in 1832  nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Elaeocarpus_bifidus
