Population

Subpopulations have been described as being disjunct with a 40-55% germination failure either through severe fragmentation or inbreeding (Kundu 2009).A study done in the Subansiri area of the eastern Himalaya (a study area of 20,000 km2) counted six trees with stem size between 31 to 45 cm (Behera et al. 2002). Seven flowering trees have been recorded in Thailand and one across the boarder in Myanmar. No young seedlings have been recorded in Thailand since it was first found in 1997 and ripening fruits are very rare. The global population is likely to be less than 250 mature trees.

This is a rare tree which has declined substantially with habitat loss through logging and deforestation in the Assam region, mostly for agriculture. There is no sign of deforestation in Thailand but the number of mature trees is low and there are no seedlings suggesting very poor germination rates for this species.

Conservation Actions

This species may occur in the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. It is only found in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Thailand and seems to be well protected within these regions. It has been cultivated at TISTR to produce more than 300 flowering trees.

Range Description:

Magnolia gustavii is found in the Assam region of India where it is confined to the Makum forest with potential forest area remaining of 1,743 km2. It is also found in within national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Thailand (Phetchaburi, Tak, Kamphaengphet and Kanchanaburi provinces). One specimen has been found in Myanmar, across the border from Kanchanaburi, Thailand, however it is uncertain whether this species is found in other areas of Myanmar.

Justification

Magnolia gustavii was classified as Vulnerable in 1998 when the population was believed to be less than 1,000 individuals. Since then the area of forest cover has decreased and the number of individuals has declined substantially and is believed to be less than 50 individuals in India. Subpopulations in Thailand are small and scattered. There in no population information for Myanmar and only a single tree has been recorded from across the boarder of Thailand. It is thought that there are less than 250 mature individuals of this species and recruitment rates are very low with an estimated germination failure of 40-55%. No seedlings have been recorded from Thailand since its discovery there. It is likely that there are less than 50 mature individuals in each subpopulation. Therefore, this species has been assessed as Critically Endangered C2a(i).
