Magnolia gustavii is found in the Assam region of India where it is confined to the Makum forest with potential forest area remaining of 1,743 km2. It is also found in within national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Thailand (Phetchaburi, Tak, Kamphaengphet and Kanchanaburi provinces). One specimen has been found in Myanmar, across the border from Kanchanaburi, Thailand, however it is uncertain whether this species is found in other areas of Myanmar.
